Tax Bill "Brings Tax Relief to Those Who Need It Most: Hardworking Pennsylvania Taxpayers"

Statement

Date: Nov. 2, 2017
Issues: Taxes

Congressman Patrick Meehan (R-Pa.), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, today issued the following statement on the release of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, H.R. 1:

"Our tax code is broken. Too much comes out of the pockets of middle class families. It's sending good-paying American jobs overseas. It's just not getting the job done for hardworking taxpayers," said Congressman Meehan. "Today, my colleagues on the House Ways and Means Committee and I released legislation that would revamp our tax code and put it to work for the middle class. It makes filing your taxes simpler and will spur job growth that will put Pennsylvanians back to work. Most importantly, it brings real tax relief to those who need it most: hardworking Pennsylvania taxpayers."

"It cuts rates for middle class families," Meehan continued. "It includes a new Family Credit, which expands the existing child tax credit and adds a new credit for each parent and non-child dependent to help cover every day expenses. It preserves important deductions I fought for like mortgage interest, charitable contribution, 401(k) retirement savings and state and local property taxes. It will help more families afford education costs and includes a bipartisan measure I championed that allows tax-free college savings plans to be used for apprenticeship and vocational programs."

"It gives small businesses a tax cut. It will create good-paying jobs by letting small businesses keep more of their earnings to expand, invest and hire -- and it simplifies the code so small business owners can spend more time growing their business and less time paying their taxes."

"As the bill moves through the Ways and Means Committee, the whole House and as it eventually reconciles with the Senate, I'm going to keep working to ensure it's a good deal for the Pennsylvania families I represent.," Meehan said.
